Your Cheat Sheet to the Royal Navy

The Royal Navy have the additional invaluable task of protecting not only our maritime national security but also our trading.

The Royal Navy protects home and international waters with world class personnel and the latest technology – making sure our global trade can proceed without a hitch.

KEY ACTIVITIES

MAINTAINING TRADING CAPABILITIES

Being one of the global heavyweights in trade, we import over 17.3 billion tonnes of goods into the UK every year across the seas and employ 600,000+ UK jobs directly in maritime trade. Keeping our floating markets open is something our economy depends upon and needs international security 365 days a year.

COMBATING PIRACY, TERRORISM, TRAFFICKING & ILLICIT TRADE

90% of world trade is transported by sea. This inevitably attracts groups seeking to illegally profit. As the UK is an island nation, and dependent on sea trade, the Royal Navy is committed to protecting the integrity and sustainability of our maritime commerce.

Keeping the high seas safe to be lawfully used is a full-time international effort. The Royal Navy works with NATO and other allied nations on security operations and exercises all around the world, including the Gulf and off the Horn of Africa.

All the Armed Forces operate in unforgiving and extreme terrain but the the Royal Navy have potentially one of the most unpredictable and vast environments of all. With surveillance and communications absolutely essential at the highest possible standard, Royal Navy officers and soldiers are the 'Senior Service' and find themselves in great demand.
